Privacy notice

The Codex counts visits only if you allow it. Without your OK, nothing from Google loads and no cookie is set.

Who runs this site

History's NPCs, the YouTube Shorts channel @HistorysNPCs, runs historysnpcs.com. Contact: privacy@historysnpcs.com.

What we collect, and only if you click Allow

We use Google Analytics 4 to see how many people visit and which entries they read. It records the pages you view, how far you scroll, how long you spend on a page, which links you follow to other sites (such as YouTube), how you arrived (for example from a YouTube description), your device, browser and screen size, and an approximate location (country or city) worked out from your IP address. Google says Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses.

It sets two cookies: _ga holds a random ID so that repeat visits are counted once, and _ga_5PTHELYRPS keeps track of the current visit. They expire two years after your last visit, unless you clear them sooner or choose No thanks, which deletes them.

We don't use Google Analytics for advertising: on this site, advertising storage and ad personalisation always stay off. No ads, nothing sold.

Why, and on what basis

To learn which entries are useful so we can make the Codex better. The legal basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

Who receives it, and for how long

Google (Google Ireland Limited, and Google LLC in the United States) provides the analytics service and receives this data, which may be processed outside South Africa and the EU, including in the US. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services. Google Analytics keeps the detailed records for two months after your last visit, then deletes them; only totals remain in our reports.

Without your OK

No analytics, no cookies. Your theme and your cookie choice are saved in your own browser (local storage) and never sent anywhere. Fonts are served from this site, not from Google.

The site is hosted on GitHub Pages. Like any web host, GitHub processes your IP address to deliver pages and keep the service secure; see GitHub's privacy statement. Links to YouTube take you to YouTube, where Google's own privacy policy applies.

Children

The Codex is written for a general audience, students included. If you're under 18, please ask a parent or guardian before choosing Allow.

Your choices and rights

Change your mind at any time with , which is also at the bottom of every page. You can also ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, or object to it: email privacy@historysnpcs.com. Because analytics data is tied to a random ID rather than your name, we may need that ID (the value of the _ga cookie) to find it.

If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Regulator in South Africa (inforegulator.org.za) or to the data protection authority where you live.

Changes

If this notice changes, we'll update it here and change the date at the top.
